Long Island Writers Retreats: Where Authors Find Their Voice

As I drove out of the bustling streets of New York City and into the serene landscapes of Long Island, I felt a sense of tranquility wash over me. The scenic beauty, dotted with charming towns and expansive beaches, has become a haven for writers seeking both inspiration and solitude. During my recent visit to the Long Island Writers Retreat, held at the enchanting Montauk Manor from June 12 to June 15, 2025, I witnessed firsthand how this picturesque setting cultivates creativity and camaraderie among aspiring authors.

The retreat, which has garnered a reputation over the years for its immersive workshops and supportive atmosphere, attracted writers from various backgrounds. From seasoned novelists to passionate poets, the diversity of talent was palpable. I attended a workshop led by acclaimed author Jennifer Egan, who shared her insights on character development and narrative structure, leaving participants buzzing with inspiration. Egan's ability to connect with each writer, offering personalized feedback, made the experience unforgettable.

Beyond the structured workshops, the retreat provided ample opportunities for networking and fellowship. Evenings were spent around crackling bonfires, where stories were exchanged, and friendships were forged. I found myself engrossed in conversations about the literary world with other attendees, including a debut novelist from Brooklyn and a memoirist from Westchester. The sense of community was palpable—everyone was there to uplift one another and share their unique experiences in the literary landscape.

One of the highlights of my visit was the 'Open Mic Night,' where participants had the chance to share their work. I was blown away by the talent on display; from heart-wrenching personal essays to whimsical short stories, the range of voices was as dynamic as New York itself. The evening culminated in a surprise guest appearance by local poet Maya Angelou III, who offered words of encouragement and wisdom, reminding us all of the power of storytelling.

As I packed my bags to return to the city, I carried with me not just new friendships and inspiration, but a renewed sense of purpose. The Long Island Writers Retreat is more than just a getaway; it's a celebration of the written word and a testament to the vibrant literary community that thrives just outside the city. For those seeking to unlock their creative potential, this retreat offers a sanctuary where authors truly find their voice amidst the beauty of Long Island.
